Why Buy a Used Dodge Transmission from Auto Power Source
Dodge runs one of the most varied transmission lineups in North America. The heavy-duty side is Cummins-focused: the 68RFE 6-speed automatic and 48RE 4-speed automatic behind the 6.7L and 5.9L Cummins, plus the NV5600 and Mercedes-built G56 6-speed manuals. The HEMI-era RWD side runs the ZF-built 8HP70 8-speed (Charger, Challenger, Durango, Grand Cherokee, Ram 1500) or the older Mopar 545RFE and 42RLE. And the FWD side — Caravan, Journey, Avenger, Stratus — uses Chrysler's 41TE 4-speed and 62TE 6-speed transaxles. Matching the exact transmission code and emissions year is critical: a 68RFE from a 2010 6.7L Cummins is calibrated very differently from a 2013+ unit, and 545RFE generations differ between MDS and non-MDS HEMI applications.
Every Dodge transmission we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse. Each unit goes through our six-step inspection: VIN-matching against the donor and against your truck or car, ASE Shift-Testing through every forward and reverse gear under load, noise verification on the test stand, full visual inspection of the case, pan, and bell housing, multi-angle photography for your approval, and palletized freight shipping. NV5600 and G56 units get extra audible inspection for bearing whine and clutch pack wear — both are known wear items on Cummins-duty manuals. The 68RFE gets emissions-year documentation on every listing so you can confirm the 2010/2013+ split. Rejected units never reach the buyer.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for the same Mopar/ZF/Cummins-spec engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty wooden pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and you have 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees, no return freight charges. Up to a 3-year warranty covers you if anything goes wrong after install, and our six-step inspection has held our fitment-related return rate at 0% across 100,000+ shipments.

Dodge Transmission Buying Guide
Dodge shares much of its transmission catalog with Chrysler and Jeep through Stellantis — the ZF 8HP70 in your Charger is the same family as the one in a 300 or a Grand Cherokee, but calibration and torque converter can differ. Cummins-specific units require an even tighter match. Five things to verify before buying a used Dodge transmission:
-
68RFE Cummins — emissions-year matching is critical. A 68RFE pulled from a 2010 6.7L Cummins truck has different valve body programming than a 2013+ unit. Mixing them across the 2013 emissions-strategy break will throw codes and require a tune. We document donor year on every 68RFE we list.
-
2WD vs 4WD/AWD is not interchangeable. 4WD 545RFE, 68RFE, and 42RLE units carry a different rear extension housing and output shaft for the transfer case. Charger and Challenger AWD use a different ZF 8HP70 case than the RWD version. Always confirm drivetrain before ordering.
-
NV5600 6th-gear nut and input-shaft bearing wear is a known service issue. Every NV5600 we sell is stand-tested with audible inspection in all six gears under load. Any unit showing whine, bearing roughness, or a loose 6th-gear retaining nut is rejected. Ask us for the test log.
-
Fluid specs are not interchangeable across the Dodge lineup. Mopar ATF+4 fills 545RFE / 68RFE / 42RLE / 48RE; ZF Lifeguard 8 (ZF Lifeguardfluid 8) is the only fluid for the 8HP70; G56 takes Mopar synthetic manual transmission lubricant. Using the wrong fluid will void your warranty and damage clutch packs within hundreds of miles.
-
Always run the donor VIN before installing. Mopar TIPM data ties the transmission control module to the donor's engine and chassis profile. We provide the donor VIN for any Dodge transmission in our inventory on request — it is the single best way to confirm an exact-fit match.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any transmission ships.
