Why Buy a Used Jeep Transmission from Auto Power Source
Jeep's transmission catalog divides on vehicle architecture before anything else. Body-on-frame 4x4s — Wrangler, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee — run longitudinal units: the modern ZF 8HP70 and 8HP75, the heavy-duty 545RFE / 65RFE / 66RFE family shared with Ram, and manuals from the NSG370 back to the Aisin AX-15. Unibody crossovers — Cherokee KL, Compass, Renegade — run transverse transaxles: the ZF-designed 9HP48 / 948TE, the Fiat-built C635 manual, or a Jatco CVT. These two families share almost nothing. On the 4x4 side the transmission is only half the driveline: it mates to a separate transfer case.
Every Jeep transmission we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse. Each unit goes through our six-step inspection: VIN-matching, ASE Shift-Testing through every gear under load, noise verification, full visual inspection of case, pan, bellhousing, and output flange, multi-angle photography for your approval, and palletized freight shipping. The 9HP48 gets TCM software revision verification, and Jatco CVT units get belt-and-pulley inspection plus fluid-service review. Rejected units never reach the buyer.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for the same Jeep engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and you have 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. Up to a 3-year warranty covers you if anything goes wrong after install, and our six-step inspection has held our fitment-related return rate at 0% across 100,000+ shipments.

Jeep Transmission Buying Guide
Jeep shares much of its automatic catalog with Dodge and Chrysler through Stellantis, but the 4x4 driveline adds a step nobody else has: the transfer case. Five things to verify before buying a used Jeep transmission:
-
The transfer case is a separate matched component — confirm which one you have. On a 4x4 Jeep the transmission mates to a transfer case, and they are not one part. Wrangler Rubicon runs the NV241OR Rock-Trac (4:1 low range); Sport and Sahara run NV241 Command-Trac at 2.72:1. Grand Cherokee uses Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II by trim. Spline count and adapter pattern follow the case — order the pair together or confirm your case will mate.
-
8HP70 vs 8HP75 vs 8HP95 — same ZF family, three different units. The 8HP70 and 8HP75 cover Wrangler JL, Gladiator, and Grand Cherokee gas and diesel applications; the 8HP95 is the high-torque Trackhawk / SRT / Durango Hellcat unit rated past 700 lb-ft. Different torque converters, valve bodies, and TCM calibration. Do not cross-shop on model year alone.
-
Longitudinal 4x4 and transverse unibody transaxles never cross-fit. Wrangler, Gladiator, and Grand Cherokee run longitudinal units. Cherokee KL, Compass, and Renegade run transverse transaxles (9HP48 / 948TE, Fiat C635, Jatco CVT) with the differential integrated into the case. A 9HP48 will never go into a Wrangler. Match by chassis, not badge.
-
AX-15 vs AX-5 is decided by engine, not model. The Aisin AX-15 sits behind the 4.0L inline-six; the AX-5 sits behind the 2.5L four. Different input shaft and bellhousing pattern, and the same YJ, TJ, or XJ could have shipped with either. AX-15 units carry collector demand and we verify the pairing against the donor before listing.
-
Wrangler 4xe uses a modified 8HP75 with an integrated motor-generator. The 4xe PHEV unit is not the gas 8HP75 — it houses a motor-generator between the engine and torque converter, with different housing, sensors, and calibration. Confirm hybrid vs gas before ordering and send us the donor VIN.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any transmission ships.
