Why Buy a Used Dodge Transmission from Auto Power Source
Dodge runs one of the most varied transmission lineups in North America. Heavy-duty automatics like the 545RFE and 68RFE survive Ram truck duty; the modern ZF-built 8HP70 powers HEMI Charger, Challenger, Durango, and Grand Cherokee; and the legendary NV5600 and G56 six-speeds are still the favorite swap for Cummins-powered Rams. Matching the exact transmission code and emissions year is critical — a 68RFE from a 2010 6.7L Cummins is calibrated very differently than a 2013+ unit, and 545RFE generations differ between MDS and non-MDS HEMI applications. Get it wrong and you are looking at a tune at minimum, or a no-start at worst.
Every one of our 1,426 verified Dodge transmissions has been pulled from a low-mileage donor, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse pending sale. Each unit goes through our six-step inspection: VIN-matching, Shift-Testing through every forward and reverse gear under load by our ASE-certified technicians, noise verification on the test stand, full visual inspection including pan and case, multi-angle photography for your approval, and palletized freight shipping. Rejected units never reach the buyer.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for identical Mopar engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty wooden pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and you have 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees, no return freight charges. Up to a 3-year warranty covers you after install. Over 46,000 engines and transmissions shipped, 0% fitment-related returns.
Your Dodge Transmission Options: Compared
Most Dodge owners face four real choices when a transmission fails:
| Option | Cost | Reliability | Warranty | Fitment Match |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Used OEM (this collection) | $$$ Best Value | High | Up to 3 years | VIN-matched |
| New OEM (dealer) | $$$$$ 2-4× more | High | Manufacturer | Exact |
| Reman / Rebuilt | $$$$ | Varies | 6-12 mo | May adapt |
| Junkyard pull | $ Cheapest | Unknown | None | DIY |
Tested used OEM hits the sweet spot — same Mopar / ZF engineering as new, a fraction of dealer cost.
Dodge Transmission Buying Guide
Dodge transmissions can be unforgiving when mismatched — the wrong year code can mean a stuck-in-limp-mode truck the day you install it. Five things to verify before you buy:
- Match the donor's emissions year exactly on 68RFE Cummins units. A 68RFE pulled from a 2010 6.7L Cummins truck has different valve body programming than a 2013+ unit. Mixing them across the 2013 emissions-strategy break will throw codes and require a tune. We document donor year on every 68RFE we list.
- 2WD vs 4WD/AWD is not interchangeable. 4WD 545RFE, 68RFE, and 42RLE units carry a different rear extension housing and output shaft for the transfer case. Charger and Challenger AWD use a different ZF 8HP70 case than the RWD version. Always confirm drivetrain before ordering.
- NV5600 6th-gear nut and input-shaft bearing wear is a known service issue. Every NV5600 we sell is stand-tested with audible inspection in all six gears under load. Any unit showing whine, bearing roughness, or a loose 6th-gear retaining nut is rejected. Ask us for the test log.
- Fluid specs are not interchangeable. Mopar ATF+4 fills 545RFE/68RFE/42RLE/48RE; ZF Lifeguard 8 (HP-AT-FE/ZF Lifeguardfluid 8) is the only fluid for the 8HP70; G56 takes Mopar synthetic manual transmission lubricant. Using the wrong fluid will void your warranty and damage clutch packs within hundreds of miles.
- Always run the donor VIN before installing. Mopar TIPM data ties the transmission control module to the donor's engine and chassis profile. We can pull and share the donor VIN for any Dodge transmission in our inventory on request — it is the single best way to confirm an exact-fit match.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every point above against your VIN before any transmission ships.
