Why Buy a Used Acura Transmission from Auto Power Source
Acura's transmission catalog spans two distinct engineering eras — the Honda-derived 5-speed B7XA and BVGA family (TL, CL, MDX, RL from 1999–2008), and the modern ZF-and-Acura-collaborative designs starting with the 6-speed J35-paired unit (2009–2014), the ZF 9HP 9-speed (2015+ TLX/MDX/RDX), and culminating in the 10-speed Type S (2021+ TLX/MDX Type S) and the 9-speed DCT in the 2nd-gen NSX. Getting the wrong unit means TCM codes, wrong final drive, or complete non-interchange — particularly on the ZF 9HP where Acura's calibration is programmed differently than the Chrysler/Jeep 9HP, and on Type S 10-speeds which are J35Y6-specific.
Every Acura transmission we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor vehicle, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse. Each unit went through our six-step inspection — VIN-matching, ASE Shift-Testing through every gear under load, noise & smoke verification, full visual inspection, multi-angle photography, and palletized shipping. Our ASE-certified technicians do the testing; rejected units never reach the buyer. Acura's B7XA-family 5-speeds get extra scrutiny for the known 3rd-gear failure pattern on early units, and DCT clutch packs on the 8-speed ILX and 9-speed NSX get specific stop-and-go wear testing.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for identical Acura engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and get 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. Up to a 3-year warranty covers you if anything goes wrong after install. Across 100,000+ engines and transmissions shipped, we hold a 0% fitment-related return rate.

Acura Transmission Buying Guide
Acura's transmission catalog is compact but full of platform-specific traps — the same case can appear in three different vehicles with different valve-body calibration and final drive. Five things to verify before buying a used Acura transmission:
-
Confirm the exact transmission tag on the case. Acura uses ID tags stamped or riveted to the case to identify the precise variant. The same TL or MDX model year can ship with multiple transmission options, and swapping across variants can cause TCM codes and incorrect line pressure. Provide your VIN and we'll match the tag.
-
ZF 9HP: Acura calibration is NOT interchangeable with Chrysler/Jeep 9HP. The 9-speed ZF 9HP in the TLX V6, MDX, and RDX 3rd gen looks physically similar to units in the Cherokee/Renegade/Pacifica, but Acura's TCM calibration, torque map, and shift schedule are different. Do not source across manufacturers.
-
FWD vs SH-AWD is a full transaxle-plus-PTU swap. The 6-speed J35-paired and ZF 9HP transaxles differ between FWD and SH-AWD applications — output shaft geometry, final drive ratio, and the rear power-takeoff unit are all specific. If you have SH-AWD, verify the transaxle AND the rear PTU are being sourced as a matched set.
-
For CVT and DCT applications, ask about service history and clutch condition. CVT longevity in ILX and RDX 2nd gen depends heavily on Acura HCF-2 fluid service intervals. The 8-speed DCT in the ILX 2.4L and the 9-speed DCT in the 2nd-gen NSX are dual-clutch units — we specifically test clutch pack condition, since heavy stop-and-go wear affects DCTs differently than torque-converter automatics.
-
For Type S 10-speed, verify J35Y6 pairing. The 10-speed Type S is calibrated specifically for the J35Y6 turbo V6 in the TLX Type S and MDX Type S. Cross-fitting to a non-Type-S J35 will trigger TCM codes and inappropriate shift patterns.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any transmission ships.
