BMW Transmissions We Cover
Real transmissions from our warehouse, VIN-matched and ready to ship. Our BMW inventory spans every major ZF automatic family (5HP, 6HP, 8HP, 8HP70, GA8HP), the GS6 6-speed manual, the SMG and M-DCT performance units, the modern F-series GS7D36SG DCT, and xDrive transfer cases for AWD applications.

Why Buy a Used BMW Transmission from Auto Power Source
BMW transmissions — particularly the ZF-sourced 5HP, 6HP, and 8HP automatic families — are renowned for precision shift quality, but they are also among the most expensive transmissions to replace new. Beyond the volume ZF automatics, BMW offers the GS6 6-speed manual (M3, 335i, 535i), the SMG sequential paddle-shift used in E46 M3 and E60 M5, the M-DCT 7-speed dual-clutch on E9x M3, the F-series GS7D36SG DCT on modern M3/M4, plus xDrive transfer cases that pair with each generation. The wrong unit will not bolt up, the TCU will throw codes, and on xDrive applications you will also need a compatible transfer case. VIN-matching catches these mismatches before a unit ever ships.
Every BMW transmission we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor vehicle, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse. Each unit went through our six-step inspection — VIN-matching, ASE Shift-Testing through every gear under load, noise & smoke verification, full visual inspection, multi-angle photography, and palletized shipping. ZF 8HP units in particular get a Mechatronic sleeve and valve-body inspection — that is the most common failure point on the 8-speed family, and we flag any unit that shows wear before listing. Rejected units never reach the buyer.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for identical BMW engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and get 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. Up to a 3-year warranty covers you if anything goes wrong after install. Across 100,000+ engines and transmissions shipped, we hold a 0% fitment-related return rate.
Your BMW Transmission Options: Compared
Most BMW owners face four real choices when their transmission fails:
| Option | Cost | Reliability | Warranty | Fitment Match |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Used OEM (this collection) | $$$ Best Value | High | Up to 3 years | VIN-matched |
| New OEM (dealer) | $$$$$ 2-4× more | High | Manufacturer | Exact |
| Rebuilt / Reman | $$$$ | Varies | 6-12 mo | May adapt |
| Junkyard | $ Cheapest | Unknown | None | DIY |
Tested used OEM hits the sweet spot — same engineering as new, fraction of the cost.
BMW Transmission Buying Guide
BMW's transmission catalog spans ZF automatics, GS6 manuals, SMG and M-DCT performance units, F-series DCT, and xDrive transfer cases — and they are not cross-compatible. Five things to verify before buying a used BMW transmission:
- Identify your transmission family before ordering. BMW uses ZF automatics (5HP, 6HP, 8HP, 8HP70, GA8HP), 6-speed GS6 manuals, SMG and M-DCT performance units, the modern GS7D36SG F-series DCT, and xDrive transfer cases. The correct unit depends on your engine, year, and drivetrain — they are not cross-compatible even across the same model year.
- RWD and xDrive are not interchangeable. A 335i and a 335xi use different transmission and transfer-case combinations even in the same model year. Always specify your exact drivetrain when ordering, and on xDrive applications verify the transfer-case ratio as well — a mismatched transfer case will cause driveline binding.
- Match the BMW transmission code from your VIN. BMW prints the transmission family code on the housing tag and references it in the VIN data block. Text us your full VIN and we will confirm the exact family, gear ratio, and Mechatronic revision before quoting.
- For ZF 8HP and 8HP70 units, ask about Mechatronic sleeve and valve-body condition. The Mechatronic unit is the most common failure point on BMW's ZF 8-speed family. Our inspections explicitly check sleeve and valve-body condition; any unit showing wear is rejected before listing. Do not skip this check on any 8HP variant.
- Plan to replace transmission fluid and filter at install. ZF 8HP units are particularly sensitive to contaminated fluid. A fresh fluid and filter at install protects your warranty and your investment — and is required by some BMW service procedures. Use only ZF Lifeguard 8 or BMW ATF for 8HP applications.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any transmission ships.
