Why Buy a 2012 BMW Transmission from Auto Power Source
2012 is the year the ZF 8HP spread across BMW's range while half the catalogue was still on six speeds, and this page shows both. The new F30 328i, the F10 5-Series, the F07 GT, the F12/F13 6-Series, the F25 X3 and the E84 X1 were all 8HP; the E92 coupe and convertible, the E82 128i, the F01 7-Series including the Alpina B7, and the E70 X5 and E71 X6 all carried on with ZF 6HP or GM 6L45R six-speeds. Nine distinct architectures are listed here.
The split that actually decides fitment is xDrive against rear-drive. The ZF 8HP is built in an xDrive case and a rear-drive case with different housings and output arrangements, and they do not swap in either direction: a 535i xDrive unit will not go into a rear-drive 535i however closely the badges match. The six-speed automatics and the manuals split exactly the same way. We list the two cases as separate families and match yours from the VIN rather than the title.
Three further 2012 traps are worth knowing. The 128i was built with two different six-speed codes in one year, the ZF GA6HP19Z and the GM GA6L45R, and the code not the badge is what has to match. The 328i sedan runs two different 2.0L calibrations, N20 and N26, on the same 8HP. And most lines split on a build date: the 535i at 11/30/11 and 02/29/12, the 528i at 11/11, the 7-Series and Alpina B7 at 06/30/11, the X3 at 12/11 and on automatic stop-start, and the X1 and 335i sedan at 2/12.
Every 2012 BMW transmission here is pulled from a low-mileage donor vehicle, cleaned, and Shift-Tested by ASE-certified technicians through every gear under load. On the 8HP units the Mechatronic sleeve and valve body are inspected, on the six-speed automatics the valve body and solenoids, on the manuals the synchros and bearings, and on the M dual-clutch the actuator. Each unit is photographed before it leaves, ships with free freight and a 6-month warranty, and is covered by 30-day money-back.

2012 BMW Transmission Buying Guide
5 things to verify before buying a used 2012 BMW transmission:
-
Settle xDrive versus rear-drive first. On 2012 BMWs this is the decision that matters most, and it matters on the six-speeds and the manuals as much as on the 8HP. The xDrive case (X1, X3 28iX/35iX, X5, X6 and every xDrive sedan, coupe and GT) and the rear-drive case use different housings and output arrangements and will not substitute for each other in either direction.
-
On a 128i, match the gearbox code, not the badge. The E82 128i was built with two different six-speed automatics in the same model year: the ZF GA6HP19Z, split thru 6/11 and from 7/11, and the GM-sourced GA6L45R. They share a bellhousing pattern and nothing else that matters. Your VIN settles which one your car left the factory with.
-
Most lines split on a build date. The 535i changes at 11/30/11 and again at 02/29/12, the 528i at 11/11, the 335i sedan and the X1 at 2/12, the X3 28iX at 12/11, and the 750i, 750Li, Alpina B7 and X5 M/X6 M at 06/30/11. A unit from the wrong side of the split has different software and, on some lines, different internals.
-
The M cars and the hybrid are their own parts. The M3 and M6 use the 7-speed GS7D36SG dual-clutch, a fundamentally different unit from any torque-converter automatic in the range, and the X5 M and X6 M keep the 6-speed M Sport automatic rather than an 8HP. The ActiveHybrid 5 runs the GA8P70H with the electric motor in the bellhousing, so no standard 535i unit will substitute.
-
Confirm the match with your own VIN before you order. Your VIN settles the transmission architecture, the case, the drive type and the build split in one step, which matters on 2012 in particular, where nine architectures and two different six-speed codes are in play. Text it to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm in writing exactly which unit fits your vehicle before you pay.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.
