2008 Used Dodge Engines For Sale

55 tested 2008 Dodge engines on the shelf today, VIN-matched to your vehicle before anything ships. 2008 is the last year of the pre-Eagle 5.7L HEMI, and the year that engine wears three different 8th-digit letters — VIN 2, VIN D and VIN H — on three different accessory drives. It is also the Challenger's comeback year, the Avenger's first year, and the last year the Grand Caravan's 3.3L and 3.8L pushrod V6s run beside the new 4.0L. The 8th digit of your VIN settles which one you need. Photos before shipment, free freight to all 50 states.

Why Buy a 2008 Dodge Engine from Auto Power Source

Every 2008 Dodge engine here is a real unit on our shelf, counted live. We hold 55 of them today across twelve nameplates — Caliber, Charger, Magnum, Avenger, the Ram pickups, Durango, Sprinter, Dakota, Nitro, Grand Caravan, Challenger and Viper — and each one is matched to your vehicle by the 8th digit of your VIN before it is reserved.

2008 is a year where the same displacement hides different engines. The 5.7L HEMI appears as VIN 2 in the Ram 1500, Durango and Magnum, as VIN D in the Ram 2500, Ram 3500 and the Ram 1500 Mega Cab, and as VIN H in the Charger. The 4.7L comes as VIN N and VIN P. The Sprinter holds a 3.0L turbodiesel and a 3.5L gasoline V6. Guessing by displacement alone is how the wrong engine ships; we read the letter instead.

Every unit is compression-tested and leak-down tested before it is listed, photographed on the pallet before it leaves, and covered by our standard warranty. Freight to all 50 states is free, and our ASE-certified technicians confirm the match in writing before you pay.

Your 2008 Dodge Engine Options: Compared

Most 2008 Dodge owners face four real choices when the engine fails:

← Swipe sideways to see all columns →
Option Cost Reliability Warranty Fitment Match
Used OEM (this collection) $$$ Best Value High — tested Included VIN-matched
New OEM (dealer) $$$$$ 2-4× more High Manufacturer Exact
Aftermarket / Reman $$$$ Varies 6-12 mo May adapt
Junkyard $ Cheapest Unknown None DIY

Tested used OEM hits the sweet spot — same engineering as new, fraction of the cost.

2008 Dodge Engine Buying Guide

5 things to verify before buying a used 2008 Dodge engine:

  1. The 2008 5.7L HEMI is not a 2009. 2009 brought the Eagle 5.7L — variable valve timing, new heads, new intake and a new calibration. A 2008 unit is the earlier MDS engine and the two do not interchange in either direction. Check the model year on the donor listing, not just the displacement.
  2. Three letters for one 5.7L. VIN 2 is the Ram 1500, Durango and Magnum build. VIN D is the Ram 2500, Ram 3500 and the Ram 1500 Mega Cab, with the heavy-duty accessory drive. VIN H is the Charger. They share a displacement and nothing else you can bolt to.
  3. The Caliber is five engines. For 2008 the Caliber is listed with a 1.8L, a 2.0L gasoline, a 2.0L CRD turbodiesel, a 2.4L and a 2.4L SRT4 turbo. Several rows also split on the flow control valve mounted to the intake manifold, so the variant matters as much as the size.
  4. Three letters do double duty in 2008. T is both the 2.7L V6 and the Caliber's 2.0L CRD diesel. H is both the Charger's 5.7L HEMI and the Grand Caravan's 3.3L. P is both a 4.7L Durango V8 and the Grand Caravan's 3.8L. Reading the letter without the displacement is not enough this year.
  5. Confirm the match with your own VIN before you order. Your VIN settles the engine code, drivetrain and build split in one step. Text it to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm in writing exactly which unit fits your vehicle before you pay.

Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a 2009 5.7L HEMI fit my 2008?
No. 2009 is the Eagle 5.7L with variable valve timing, revised heads and intake, and a different calibration. Stay within 2003-2008 for a 2008 vehicle, and match the 8th digit as well.
My 2008 Ram 1500 has a 5.7L. Is that VIN 2 or VIN D?
Both appear in 2008. Regular Cab and Quad Cab rows are VIN 2; the Mega Cab is listed as VIN D, as are the Ram 2500 and 3500. Send us the VIN and we will read the 8th digit for you.
What is the difference between the 4.7L VIN N and VIN P?
VIN N is the 2008 high-output 4.7L; VIN P is the earlier casting, which still appears on a Durango row. They are not interchangeable, so we match the letter.
Is the 2008 Sprinter engine a Dodge engine?
The 2008 Sprinter is sold under the Dodge badge with a 3.0L V6 turbodiesel (VIN 5) or a 3.5L gasoline V6 (VIN 6). Both are Mercedes-designed and neither shares parts with the Chrysler 3.5L V6.
Which 6.1L do you have, and is the VIN 3 row a typo?
Our 6.1L SRT8 units are Challenger and Charger rows reading VIN W. One Magnum row is catalogued as VIN 3. We confirm the engine against your VIN before shipping rather than assume the letter.
Does the 2008 Grand Caravan still use the 3.3L and 3.8L?
Yes. 2008 is the last year the 3.3L (VIN H) and 3.8L (VIN P) pushrod V6s are listed alongside the newer 4.0L SOHC V6 (VIN X). All three are in stock and none interchange.
Is the 6.7L Cummins the same in a pickup and a chassis cab?
The engine is VIN A in both, but the chassis cab and pickup are listed separately because the accessories and exhaust routing differ. Tell us which body you have.
What do you check before an engine ships?
Every unit is compression-tested and leak-down tested, photographed on the pallet, and matched to your VIN in writing. Freight to all 50 states is free and the standard warranty applies.
