Subaru Transmissions We Cover

Real Subaru transmissions from our warehouse, tested and ready to ship. Pick the family, then the year page shows exactly which models and variants are in stock.

Used Subaru TR580 Lineartronic CVT transmission
TR580 Lineartronic CVT
Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester, Legacy and Outback 2.5 (2012+). The compact chain CVT behind the FB20 and FB25 — our deepest Subaru line, and the ID tag on the case (TR580 plus suffix) is what fixes the calibration.
Used Subaru TR690 Lineartronic CVT transmission
TR690 Lineartronic CVT
Legacy and Outback (2010–2014), Outback 3.6R, WRX (2015+), Ascent, Outback and Legacy XT 2.4T. The high-torque CVT — the WRX and Ascent units carry their own ID suffixes and do not swap with the 2.5 units.
Used Subaru 5-Speed Manual AWD (TY75 Family) transmission
5-Speed Manual AWD (TY75 Family)
Impreza, Forester, Legacy, Outback, Crosstrek, Baja (1995–2023). The long-running five-speed with the center differential built in — final-drive ratio changes by year and engine, so the rear differential must match.
Used Subaru 4EAT 4-Speed Automatic AWD transmission
4EAT 4-Speed Automatic AWD
Legacy, Outback, Forester, Impreza, Baja (1995–2010). The Phase 2 four-speed with the electronically controlled transfer clutch — shifter-switch plug and vehicle-dynamic-control versions are listed separately.
Used Subaru 5EAT 5-Speed Automatic AWD transmission
5EAT 5-Speed Automatic AWD
Outback and Legacy 3.0R and 2.5 GT (2005–2009), Tribeca (2006–2013), Outback 3.6R (2010–2014). The five-speed behind the six and the turbo — VTD and non-VTD versions differ at the center differential.
Used Subaru TY856 6-Speed Manual AWD (STI) transmission
TY856 6-Speed Manual AWD (STI)
WRX STI (2004–2021), Legacy GT spec.B. The DCCD six-speed with the driver-controlled center differential — a different case, ratio set and rear axle from the WRX five- and six-speeds.
Used Subaru TY751 6-Speed Manual AWD (WRX 2015+) transmission
TY751 6-Speed Manual AWD (WRX 2015+)
WRX (2015+), Crosstrek and Impreza 6MT (2018+). The cable-shift six-speed derived from the five-speed case, not from the STI unit — viscous center differential, and the 2022-on WRX carries its own ID suffix.
Used Subaru TR580H Hybrid CVT transmission
TR580H Hybrid CVT
Crosstrek Hybrid (2014–2016), Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid (2019+). The CVT with the motor built into the case — locked to the hybrid powertrain and year, never a substitute for a gasoline TR580.
Used Subaru Phase 1 5-Speed Manual and 4EAT (1991–1998) transmission
Phase 1 5-Speed Manual and 4EAT (1991–1998)
Legacy, Impreza, Loyale (1991–1998). The early units behind the EJ22 and EA82 — FWD, 2WD and 4WD versions are listed separately, and the Phase 1 case does not bolt to a Phase 2 engine without the matching bellhousing pattern.

Why Buy a Used Subaru Transmission from Auto Power Source

Almost every Subaru transmission is an AWD unit with the center differential or transfer clutch built into the case, and that is what makes a Subaru match different from any other brand: the transmission, the final-drive ratio and the rear differential form a set, and the ID tag on the case — TR580, TR690, TY75, TY856 and their suffixes — is what settles it. Our 578 verified Subaru transmissions cover the whole run: the TR580 and TR690 Lineartronic CVTs behind every current Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester, Legacy, Outback, WRX and Ascent, the 4EAT and 5EAT automatics of the 1995–2014 cars, the TY75 five-speed and the TY751 and TY856 six-speeds behind the WRX and STI, the TR580H hybrid, and the Phase 1 units of the early-1990s Legacy, Impreza and Loyale.

Every Subaru transmission we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor vehicle, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse pending sale. Each unit goes through our six-step inspection — VIN-matching against the donor and against your vehicle, Shift-Testing through every gear under load, noise verification, full visual inspection of case, pan and bellhousing, multi-angle photography for your approval, and palletized freight. CVT units get a fluid-condition check and a chain and pulley inspection, and every AWD unit has its final-drive ratio confirmed against the donor axle code. Rejected units never reach the buyer.

You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for the same Subaru engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and have 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. The warranty printed on the listing — with extended coverage up to 3 years available — covers you if anything goes wrong after install. Across 100K+ engines and transmissions in stock, we hold a 0% fitment-related return rate.

Your Subaru Transmission Options: Compared

Most Subaru owners face four real choices when the transmission fails:

← Swipe sideways to see all columns →
Option Cost Reliability Warranty Fitment Match
Used OEM (this collection) $$$ Best Value High — tested Included VIN-matched
New OEM (dealer) $$$$$ 2-4× more High Manufacturer Exact
Aftermarket / Reman $$$$ Varies 6-12 mo May adapt
Junkyard $ Cheapest Unknown None DIY

Tested used OEM hits the sweet spot — same engineering as new, fraction of the cost.

Subaru Transmission Buying Guide

5 things to verify before buying a used Subaru transmission:

  1. Match the ID tag on the case, then the final-drive ratio. Subaru stamps a transmission ID (TR580DHGAA, TY751V6BCB and so on) on the case, and the suffix fixes the ratio set and calibration. Because the front differential lives in the transmission, the final-drive ratio must match your rear differential — a mismatch will destroy the center differential or transfer clutch.
  2. TR580 and TR690 are two different CVTs. The TR580 sits behind the 2.0 and 2.5 fours in the Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester and 2015-on Legacy and Outback; the TR690 is the high-torque unit behind the 3.6R, the WRX, the Ascent and the 2010–2014 Legacy and Outback. They do not interchange, and neither takes a gasoline unit in place of the TR580H hybrid.
  3. Five-speed, six-speed and STI six-speed are three separate manuals. The TY75 five-speed, the TY751 WRX six-speed and the TY856 STI six-speed with DCCD share nothing but the boxer bolt pattern. The STI unit also pairs with an R180 rear differential, so a swap means the axle too.
  4. 4EAT and 5EAT automatics are listed by shifter plug and VDC. On the 2005–2009 Legacy and Outback the same 4EAT comes with a 12-pin or 9-pin shifter switch and with or without vehicle dynamic control, and the 5EAT comes with or without the VTD center differential. Every listing says which build it is — match yours.
  5. Confirm the match with your own VIN before you order. Your VIN settles the transmission code, drivetrain and build split in one step. Text it to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm in writing exactly which unit fits your vehicle before you pay.

Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the warranty on a used Subaru transmission?
Every Subaru transmission ships with a warranty included — the standard term follows the model year (1 month for 1990, 3 months for 1991–2000, 6 months for 2001 and newer) and is printed on each product page. Extended coverage of up to 3 years is available at checkout.
What does ASE-tested mean?
ASE-certified technicians compression-test every cylinder and run leak-down evaluation on engines; transmissions are Shift-Tested through all gears under load. Plus noise & smoke verification, visual inspection, and multi-angle photography before shipment.
How long until delivery?
Prep and ship time is 3-5 business days. Transit time is 2-3 business days after dispatch via freight carrier — typically 5-8 business days from order to delivery.
Can I see photos before I buy?
Yes. Multi-angle photos of the actual unit are sent before payment. If you do not approve the photos, you get every dollar back — no restocking fees, no return freight charges.
Do I need my VIN?
Yes — essential on Subaru. The same model year can carry a TR580 or a TR690 CVT, a five-speed or a six-speed manual, or a hybrid unit depending on engine and trim, and the final-drive ratio inside the transmission has to match your rear differential. Text your VIN to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm the exact transmission ID.
How do I find my exact Subaru transmission?
Pick your model year below. Every year page lists the Subaru models and transmission families we stock for that year, with the live count for each, and every product is titled by its transmission type, engine and ID tag. Years without a page yet are still in stock — text us your VIN for those.
Why cheaper than dealer new?
Used OEM from low-mileage donor vehicles. Same Subaru engineering as factory new at a fraction of the cost — dealers are typically 2-4x our pricing, and many older units are no longer available new at all.
When can I reach customer service?
Call 1-877-313-8995 or text +1-307-441-5554 during the business hours shown in the site footer, or email info@autopowersource.com any time.

Our 6-Step Inspection & Shipping Process

Every Subaru transmission we ship has been through these six steps:

1. VIN-Matching
We match the donor VIN to your VIN to confirm the transmission ID tag, final-drive ratio, engine pairing, and AWD center-differential type.
2. Tested & Verified
ASE-certified technicians Shift-Test every gear under load. CVT units get a fluid-condition and chain inspection; AWD units have the final-drive ratio confirmed against the donor axle code.
3. Noise & Smoke Verification
Units are run to verify normal mechanical sound and clean operation — catches internal wear static tests miss.
4. Visual Inspection
Every accessible component is inspected: turbos, manifolds, valve covers, housings, accessories, sensor harnesses.
5. Photograph & Catalog
Multi-angle photos sent to you BEFORE we ship for your approval.
6. Palletize & Ship
Strapped on a heavy-duty wooden pallet, shipped via freight at no charge.

Our Photos-Before-Shipment Guarantee

Before any transmission leaves our warehouse, we send you multi-angle photographs. You approve. If you do not approve, you get every dollar back — no questions, no restocking fees, no return freight charges. On top of 30-day money-back and the warranty included with every unit.
