Why Buy a Used Subaru Engine from Auto Power Source

Subaru's entire engine catalog is built around the horizontally-opposed (boxer) architecture, which gives Subaru vehicles their signature low center of gravity and symmetric all-wheel-drive layout. Within that catalog, generation matters enormously. The EJ25 SOHC 2.5L in a 2005 Outback has a well-documented head gasket vulnerability that was resolved with the switch to the FB25 in 2011 — but the FB25's early years (2011-2014) had their own class-action-level oil consumption issue that was resolved by later 2015+ ring redesign. The turbo lineage (EJ255, EJ257) is enthusiast-driven and demands verification against tuning history.

Our 800+ Subaru engines all come from low-mileage donor vehicles, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse. Each unit clears our six-step process: VIN-matched to donor and target, ASE-certified compression test on every cylinder (essential for boxer engines where head gasket condition affects both banks), leak-down evaluation, run-stand noise & smoke verification, full visual inspection, multi-angle photographs for your approval, and palletized freight. On EJ25 SOHC units we specifically test for coolant intermix and head gasket integrity. On FB25 units (2011-2014) we verify ring condition and oil consumption history. On EJ257/EJ255 turbo units we inspect ringland condition and verify against any known tuning history via ECU data pulls.

You pay a fraction of dealer pricing for identical Subaru boxer engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and get 30 days from delivery to return — no restocking fees. Up to a 3-year warranty covers you after install. Across 100,000+ Engines+Transmissions In Stock, our fitment-related return rate stays at 0%.

Your Subaru Engine Options: Compared

Most Subaru owners face four real choices when their engine fails:

← Swipe sideways to see all columns →

Tested used OEM hits the sweet spot — same engineering as new, fraction of the cost.

Subaru Engine Buying Guide

Five things to verify before buying a used Subaru engine:

  1. EJ25 SOHC head gasket vulnerability (1996-2011) is the primary risk. The naturally-aspirated 2.5L EJ25 in Legacy, Outback, Forester, and Impreza (1996-2011 SOHC variants) has a documented external head gasket failure that leads to coolant loss and eventually internal coolant intermix. We compression-test and leak-down-test every EJ25 in inventory and disclose any prior head gasket service history. Consider factoring a head gasket replacement into your install budget if the donor mileage exceeds 100K.
  2. FB25 oil consumption class action (2011-2014, some 2015). The FB25 that replaced the EJ25 (2011+ Forester, Outback, Legacy) resolved the head gasket issue but introduced a piston ring problem on the first three model years that led to a class-action settlement. Later 2015+ units use redesigned rings. We verify oil consumption history and inspect ring condition on every FB25 in inventory.
  3. EJ257/EJ255 ringland failure is documented on modified units. The 2.5L turbo boxers (EJ257 in WRX STI, EJ255 in WRX/Forester XT/Legacy GT) are strong stock but the piston ringlands are documented to fail on aftermarket-tuned engines running higher boost. We pull ECU data where available to verify no aggressive tune history and inspect ringland condition via borescope before listing.
  4. FA20 vs FA20DIT: same displacement, very different engines. The naturally-aspirated FA20 in BRZ/FR-S/86 is Subaru-manufactured for the Toyota-Subaru sports coupe partnership — D-4S dual injection resolves carbon buildup. The FA20DIT is a different engine — direct-injection turbo boxer in WRX (2015-2021) and Forester XT (2014-2018). Verify by engine code, not displacement.
  5. EZ30 & EZ36 H6 flat-six oil pump wear. The flat-six variants (EZ30 in older Outback H6 and Tribeca, EZ36 in Tribeca/Outback 3.6R/Legacy 3.6R) don't have head gasket issues but the oil pump is a documented wear item past 120K miles. Symptoms include low oil pressure at idle and ticking on start-up. We check oil pressure on every H6 before listing.

Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any engine ships.

Our 6-Step Inspection & Shipping Process

Every Subaru engine we ship has been through these six steps:

1. VIN-Matching
We match the donor VIN to your VIN to confirm engine code, emissions calibration, and drivetrain fit.
2. Tested & Verified
ASE-certified technicians compression-test every cylinder and run leak-down evaluation on each engine. Transmissions are Shift-Tested through all gears.
3. Noise & Smoke Verification
Engines are run on the test stand to verify normal mechanical sound, clean exhaust, and no abnormal smoke — catches internal wear static pressure tests miss.
4. Visual Inspection
Every accessible component is inspected: turbos, manifolds, valve covers, accessories, sensor harnesses.
5. Photograph & Catalog
Multi-angle photos sent to you BEFORE we ship for your approval.
6. Palletize & Ship
Strapped on a heavy-duty wooden pallet, shipped via freight at no charge.

Our Photos-Before-Shipment Guarantee
