  1. Confirm the exact case tag, not just the vehicle. Mazda stamps an ID tag on the case identifying the precise variant, and the same model year can ship with more than one gearbox — a 2013 Mazda3 could carry the FN4A-EL or the FW6A-EL depending on trim and engine.
  2. FWD and AWD versions are not interchangeable. Even where the case looks identical, output shaft geometry and final drive ratio differ — this bites hardest on the FNR5 across CX-7 and CX-9. Always specify your drivetrain.
  3. Fluid spec changed with Skyactiv. The FW6A-EL takes Mazda ATF FZ; earlier automatics including the FN4A-EL and FNR5 take ATF M-V. They are not interchangeable, and the wrong fluid will damage clutch packs and void your warranty.
  4. On the Skyactiv and G35M-R manuals, confirm the bellhousing. Skyactiv manual units differ in length between ND Miata and CX-5, and the G35M-R bellhousing for the RX-8 rotary does not interchange with the Miata piston application despite sharing the gearset.
