Why Buy a Used Subaru Transmission from Auto Power Source
Almost every Subaru transmission is an AWD unit with the center differential or transfer clutch built into the case, and that is what makes a Subaru match different from any other brand: the transmission, the final-drive ratio and the rear differential form a set, and the ID tag on the case — TR580, TR690, TY75, TY856 and their suffixes — is what settles it. Our 578 verified Subaru transmissions cover the whole run: the TR580 and TR690 Lineartronic CVTs behind every current Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester, Legacy, Outback, WRX and Ascent, the 4EAT and 5EAT automatics of the 1995–2014 cars, the TY75 five-speed and the TY751 and TY856 six-speeds behind the WRX and STI, the TR580H hybrid, and the Phase 1 units of the early-1990s Legacy, Impreza and Loyale.
Every Subaru transmission we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor vehicle, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse pending sale. Each unit goes through our six-step inspection — VIN-matching against the donor and against your vehicle, Shift-Testing through every gear under load, noise verification, full visual inspection of case, pan and bellhousing, multi-angle photography for your approval, and palletized freight. CVT units get a fluid-condition check and a chain and pulley inspection, and every AWD unit has its final-drive ratio confirmed against the donor axle code. Rejected units never reach the buyer.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for the same Subaru engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and have 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. The warranty printed on the listing — with extended coverage up to 3 years available — covers you if anything goes wrong after install. Across 100K+ engines and transmissions in stock, we hold a 0% fitment-related return rate.

Subaru Transmission Buying Guide
5 things to verify before buying a used Subaru transmission:
-
Match the ID tag on the case, then the final-drive ratio. Subaru stamps a transmission ID (TR580DHGAA, TY751V6BCB and so on) on the case, and the suffix fixes the ratio set and calibration. Because the front differential lives in the transmission, the final-drive ratio must match your rear differential — a mismatch will destroy the center differential or transfer clutch.
-
TR580 and TR690 are two different CVTs. The TR580 sits behind the 2.0 and 2.5 fours in the Impreza, Crosstrek, Forester and 2015-on Legacy and Outback; the TR690 is the high-torque unit behind the 3.6R, the WRX, the Ascent and the 2010–2014 Legacy and Outback. They do not interchange, and neither takes a gasoline unit in place of the TR580H hybrid.
-
Five-speed, six-speed and STI six-speed are three separate manuals. The TY75 five-speed, the TY751 WRX six-speed and the TY856 STI six-speed with DCCD share nothing but the boxer bolt pattern. The STI unit also pairs with an R180 rear differential, so a swap means the axle too.
-
4EAT and 5EAT automatics are listed by shifter plug and VDC. On the 2005–2009 Legacy and Outback the same 4EAT comes with a 12-pin or 9-pin shifter switch and with or without vehicle dynamic control, and the 5EAT comes with or without the VTD center differential. Every listing says which build it is — match yours.
-
Confirm the match with your own VIN before you order. Your VIN settles the transmission code, drivetrain and build split in one step. Text it to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm in writing exactly which unit fits your vehicle before you pay.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.
