VR38DETT 3.8L Twin-Turbo V6 (GT-R shared)

Five things to verify before buying a used Infiniti engine:

1. VQ35DE vs VQ35HR non-interchange — verify by year. The G35 sedan uses VQ35DE (2003-2006 model years) and VQ35HR (2007-2008). Different heads, different ECU calibration, different cam profiles, and higher redline on HR. They will bolt in but factory power and emissions targets won't match if wrong variant is installed. Verify by production year (not just G35 badge) and by engine code from your VIN.
2. VK56DE early oil consumption and timing chain wear. The VK56DE V8 in QX56 (2004-2010) has documented timing chain guide wear past 100K miles and oil consumption on some units. Symptoms include ticking at cold start, extended cranking, and oil warnings between changes. We inspect chain guide condition via borescope on high-mileage VK56DE units. 2011+ VK56VD (direct injection) is a different engine.
3. VR30DDTT direct-injection carbon buildup (Q50/Q60 Red Sport). The VR30DDTT 3.0L twin-turbo V6 in Q50 3.0T (2016+) and Q60 Red Sport 400 (2017+) uses direct injection — carbon buildup on intake valves is expected past 60K miles. Symptoms include cold-start misfires and reduced throttle response. Walnut-blast intake ports at install for best result — factor into install cost.
4. KR20DDET VC-Turbo is a unique engine — specialist parts. The KR20DDET Variable Compression Turbo in QX50 (2019+) and QX55 uses an industry-first variable compression ratio (8:1 to 14:1) mechanism. This is not a conventional turbo four — specialist parts, specialist repair procedures, limited aftermarket support. Verify no aftermarket tuning history and confirm dealer service records where possible before purchase.
