2017 Ram Transmission Buying Guide

1. On a 3500, find out who built your gearbox. This is the 2017 mistake, and it is the expensive one. Ram cataloged the same 3500 with either an Aisin Seiki unit — AS69RC behind the 6.7L diesel, AS66RC behind the gasoline Chassis Cab — or a Chrysler-built one, 68RFE on the diesel and 66RFE on the gas. Same year, same fuel, same drivetrain, different transmission, and nothing on the outside of the truck announces which one you have. The VIN and the build sticker do.
2. Check whether yours is a manual before anything else. Most of our 2017 stock is automatic, but not all of it: the 2500 MT 4X4 (6.7L, Diesel, VIN L, 8th Digit) and the 3500 MT 4X4 (6.7L) are genuine manual units and share nothing with their AT siblings. On a diesel 2500 the 8th VIN digit identifies the engine the manual was paired to — read it before you order.
3. On a 1500, match the displacement and then count the gears. 2017 1500 stock spans 3.6L, 5.7L and 3.0L (Diesel) in both 4X2 and 4X4, and the 5.7L was built as a 6 Speed and as an 8 Speed. Our 2017 listings separate those two by gear count and nothing else, so the displacement on its own will never narrow your order down — a 5.7L 4X4 is still two different transmissions until you know how many gears are in it.
4. Separate Pickup from Chassis Cab, and check for PTO. On the 3500 the Pickup and the Chassis Cab are cataloged apart, and the gasoline AS66RC Chassis Cabs are built either with PTO (Left Side) or W/O PTO. PTO housings are not interchangeable — a PTO case will not bolt into a truck that never had one, and a plain case cannot be adapted to drive one.
5. Do not cross-order the two vans. The full-size Promaster 1500 and 2500 run the 3.6L Gasoline Engine; the Promaster City is a separate, smaller vehicle with a 9 Speed on a 2.4L FWD driveline, cataloged by part ID (68311492 and 68257277) rather than by trim.
