On a 3500, find out who built your gearbox. This is the 2016 mistake, and it is the expensive one. Ram cataloged the same 3500 with either an Aisin Seiki unit — AS69RC behind the 6.7L diesel, AS66RC behind the gasoline Chassis Cab — or a Chrysler-built one, 68RFE on the diesel and 66RFE on the gas. Our 2016 stock holds the diesel Pickup in both makes, in both 4X2 and 4X4: same year, same fuel, same drivetrain, different transmission. Nothing on the outside of the truck announces which one you have. The VIN and the build sticker do.

On a 3.6L 1500, check for Automatic Engine Stop And Start. The 4X2 3.6L is cataloged twice for 2016 — once with Automatic Engine Stop And Start and once W/O it — and that option is the only thing that separates the two listings. It is a real fitment difference, not a trim note, and it is invisible from under the truck. If your 3.6L shuts the engine off at a red light, you need the stop/start unit.

Displacement alone will never narrow the order down — a 5.7L 4X4 is still two different transmissions until you know how many gears are in it.

On the 3500 the Pickup and the Chassis Cab are cataloged apart, and the gasoline AS66RC Chassis Cabs are built either with PTO (Left Side) or W/O PTO. PTO housings are not interchangeable — a PTO case will not bolt into a truck that never had one, and a plain case cannot be adapted to drive one.
