Lincoln Engine Buying Guide

Five things to verify before buying a used Lincoln engine:

1. 5.4L 3V cam phaser rattle is the primary Navigator risk. The Ford Modular 5.4L V8 in 3V (three-valve) form used in 2005-2014 Navigator has documented cam phaser rattle — symptoms include cold-start rattle, ticking, and eventual timing chain issues. Ford issued technical service bulletins. Repair involves phaser replacement, revised chain tensioner, and updated PCM calibration. We inspect phaser condition and disclose prior replacement history on every 5.4L 3V unit.
2. 4.6L 2V vs 3V non-interchange. Ford Modular 4.6L V8 came in 2V (two-valve, Town Car standard, Crown Victoria) and 3V (three-valve, Mustang GT 2005+, LS 4.6). Different cylinder heads, different intake, different cam profiles. They will bolt in but factory power and emissions targets won't match if wrong variant is installed.
