Why Buy a Used BMW Engine from Auto Power Source

BMW engines reward the right buyer and punish the wrong one. The N20 four-cylinder, N52 naturally aspirated inline-6, N54 and N55 turbocharged inline-6s, N62 V8, N63 hot-vee V8, B58 modular six, and the M-division S55/S63/S65/S85 powerplants each have specific VANOS layouts, eccentric-shaft sensors, valve cover gaskets, oil-feed lines, and timing-chain guides that vary by chassis code and production year. A wrong donor engine — even within the same nominal displacement — can mean wasted weeks, return freight, and an engine bay full of incompatible plumbing.

Our 1,783 verified BMW engines have all been pulled from low-mileage donor vehicles, cataloged by VIN and chassis code (E46, E60, E70, E90, F10, F30, G05, G30, etc.), and held in our climate-controlled warehouse. Each unit went through our six-step inspection: VIN-matching against your chassis, compression and leak-down testing by ASE-certified technicians, noise and smoke verification on the test stand, visual inspection of VANOS solenoids and oil-feed plumbing, multi-angle photography sent for your approval, and palletized shipping.

You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for the same BMW Motorsport engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and get 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. The warranty printed on the listing — with extended coverage up to 3 years available — covers you after install. Across 100K+ engines and transmissions in stock, our fitment-related return rate sits at 0% because we verify before we send.

Your BMW Engine Options: Compared

Most BMW owners face four real choices when the engine fails:

← Swipe sideways to see all columns →
Option Cost Reliability Warranty Fitment Match
Used OEM (this collection) $$$ Best Value High — tested Included VIN-matched
New OEM (dealer) $$$$$ 2-4× more High Manufacturer Exact
Aftermarket / Reman $$$$ Varies 6-12 mo May adapt
Junkyard $ Cheapest Unknown None DIY

Tested used OEM hits the sweet spot — same engineering as new, fraction of the cost.

BMW Engine Buying Guide

5 things to verify before buying a used BMW engine:

  1. Match the engine code, not just the displacement. BMW uses multiple engines at the same displacement across generations — a 3.0L could be M54, N52, N54, N55, B58, or even S54 depending on the chassis. Your VIN's 8th digit and the chassis code together pinpoint the exact engine family.
  2. Confirm chassis code and pre- vs post-LCI status. The same engine family (for example N55) was used across E-, F- and G-series chassis with different oil pans, intake manifolds, wiring harnesses and exhaust manifolds — an F30 N55 will not bolt cleanly into an E92 without bracket and harness changes. BMW also refreshes harnesses, sensor placement and ECU mapping mid-cycle, so a pre-LCI 2014 F30 N20 will not always plug into a post-LCI 2016 car. We verify LCI status during VIN matching.
  3. Specify RWD vs xDrive. Oil pan geometry and front sump shape differ between rear- and all-wheel-drive applications. Order the wrong one and the engine will not clear the front differential or driveshaft on an xDrive car.
  4. Ask about the wear points specific to your family. On N54, N55 and S55 turbo engines that means HPFP, wastegate and timing-chain history. On the V8s and V10 — N62, N63, S63, S65, S85 — it means timing-chain-guide condition, valve stem seals, and rod bearing replacement history. A good donor engine should disclose prior replacements or the original mileage on those components.
  5. Always run the donor vehicle VIN if available. On BMW the donor VIN decodes the chassis code, engine family and LCI window in one step — the three things that decide whether a unit fits — and lets you verify mileage and service history. We provide the donor VIN on request before you commit.

Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the warranty on a used BMW engine?
Every BMW engine ships with a warranty included — the standard term follows the model year (1 month for 1990, 3 months for 1991–2000, 6 months for 2001 and newer) and is printed on each product page. Extended coverage of up to 3 years is available at checkout.
What does ASE-tested mean?
ASE-certified technicians compression-test every cylinder and run leak-down evaluation on engines; transmissions are Shift-Tested through all gears under load. Plus noise & smoke verification, visual inspection, and multi-angle photography before shipment.
How long until delivery?
Prep and ship time is 3-5 business days. Transit time is 2-3 business days after dispatch via freight carrier — typically 5-8 business days from order to delivery.
Can I see photos before I buy?
Yes. Multi-angle photos of the actual unit are sent before payment. If you do not approve the photos, you get every dollar back — no restocking fees, no return freight charges.
Do I need my VIN?
Yes — essential on BMW. The same displacement covers several engine families (M54, N52, N54, N55, B58), and the chassis code plus pre- or post-LCI status decides harness and mounting fit. Text your VIN to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm the exact unit.
How do I find my exact BMW engine?
Pick your model year below. Every year page lists the BMW models and engine families we stock for that year, with the live count for each, and every product is titled by its VIN engine code.
Why cheaper than dealer new?
Used OEM from low-mileage donor vehicles. Same BMW engineering as factory new at a fraction of the cost — dealers are typically 2-4x our pricing, and many older units are no longer available new at all.
