Why Buy a 2020 BMW Engine from Auto Power Source
2020 is the model year where BMW's modular engine range is at its widest, and that is exactly why the engine code matters more than the displacement. A 2020 car badged 2.0L can carry a B46 or a B48 in standard tune, or the B48TU in the 301 hp M235i. A 3.0L can be a standard B58 out of a 440i or an X5 xDrive40i, the high-output B58 out of an M240i or X3 M40i, or the hand-built S55 out of an M2 Competition or M4. We stock all of them for 2020, and we hold them apart rather than letting one 3.0L stand in for another.
The same discipline applies to the 4.4L V8 cars. We list the N63 at its stated output — 456 hp in the X5 and X7 xDrive50i, 523 hp in the M550i, M850i, 750i and the X5 and X7 M50i, and 600 hp in the Alpina B7, where the turbochargers, cooling pack and calibration are Alpina's own. Those are not one part with three badges, and a page that lumped them together would be setting a buyer up for a return.
2020 is also the only point in the BMW range where you can buy two completely different i3 drivetrains under one nameplate. The battery-electric i3 and i3s ship as a motor and gearbox assembly with no combustion hardware at all; the REx cars add a 647 cc two-cylinder generator set that never drives the wheels. We hold both, we label both, and we will tell you which one your car left the factory with before you pay for anything.
Everything here is used OEM, pulled from low-mileage donor vehicles, cataloged on arrival and held indoors pending sale. Our ASE-certified technicians compression-test every cylinder and run a leak-down evaluation, then a noise and smoke check on the test stand, before any unit is approved for sale. You see multi-angle photographs of the actual engine before it ships, and if you do not approve them you get every dollar back with no restocking fee and no return freight charge.

2020 BMW Engine Buying Guide
5 things to verify before buying a used 2020 BMW engine:
-
Read the engine code, not the displacement. On a 2020 BMW the litre figure settles almost nothing. 2.0L spans the B46, the B48 and the high-output B48TU; 3.0L spans the standard B58, the M Performance B58 and the S55; 4.4L spans three different N63 tunes. Work from the code and the stated output, and treat the displacement as a filter rather than an answer.
-
Keep the high-output engines separate from the standard ones. The M240i, X3 M40i and M235i do not run a tuned version of the ordinary engine — they run their own turbocharger, pistons, charge cooling and ECU calibration. A standard B58 will not stand in for an M Performance B58, and the swap does not work in the other direction either. The same holds for the S55 in the M2 Competition and M4, which shares no long block with any B58.
-
Confirm RWD against xDrive before you commit. Oil pan profile, sump pickup, front-axle clearance, accessory brackets and harness routing can all differ between a rear-drive car and its xDrive twin, even where the long block is identical. Two of our 2020 rows carry a drivetrain label that reads against the nameplate — our team resolves those against the build record on request rather than guessing from the title.
-
Decide between i3 eDrive and i3 REx at the start. These are not variants of one part. The battery-electric cars use a motor and single-speed gearbox assembly; the REx cars add a 647 cc two-cylinder generator with its own mounts, cooling, exhaust and fuel system. Ordering the wrong one is not a fitment adjustment, it is a different vehicle architecture.
-
Confirm the match with your own VIN before you order. Your VIN settles the engine code, drivetrain and build split in one step. Text it to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm in writing exactly which unit fits your vehicle before you pay.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.
