Why Buy a 2021 BMW Engine from Auto Power Source
2021 is the year BMW's modular engine range is at its widest, and that is exactly why the engine code matters more than the displacement. A 2021 3.0L can be a standard B58 out of a 740i, X5 xDrive40i or X7 xDrive40i; a high-output B58 out of an M240i or X3 M40i, with its own turbocharger, pistons and cooling pack; or the S55 out of the M2 Competition, which is a different M-division block entirely. A 2.0L can be a B46 or a B48, transverse in an X1, X2 or 228i Gran Coupe and longitudinal in a 230i, 330i or X4. Nothing about the badge tells you which — the code does.
All 20 of our 2021 BMW engines were pulled from low-mileage donor vehicles, cataloged by VIN and chassis code (G20, G29, G42, G01, G02, G05, G07, G11, F39, F44), and held in our climate-controlled warehouse. Each one went through our six-step inspection: VIN-matching against your chassis, compression and leak-down testing by ASE-certified technicians, noise and smoke verification on the test stand, visual inspection of the turbo plumbing, VANOS solenoids and oil-feed lines, multi-angle photography sent for your approval, and palletized shipping.
Drivetrain is the other 2021 split that bites. The 330i is listed by its sixth VIN digit — 1 for RWD, 7 for xDrive — because the oil pan and front sump geometry differ, and an xDrive pan will not clear a RWD subframe or the other way round. The xDrive28i and xDrive30i four-cylinders are transverse or longitudinal depending on platform. You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for the same BMW engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and get 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. Across 100K+ engines and transmissions in stock, our fitment-related return rate sits at 0% because we verify before we send.

2021 BMW Engine Buying Guide
5 things to verify before buying a used 2021 BMW engine:
-
Match the engine code, not the litre figure. On a 2021 BMW the same 3.0L covers the standard B58, the high-output B58 in the M240i and X3 M40i, and the S55 in the M2 Competition. The 2.0L covers both B46 and B48. The code decides the turbo, the pistons, the cooling pack and the harness — the badge decides none of it.
-
Separate standard B58 from the M Performance B58. A 40i B58 and an M240i or M40i B58 share a family name and almost nothing else that matters for a swap: different turbocharger, different pistons, different charge cooling, different ECU mapping. They are not interchangeable in either direction, and we hold both in 2021.
-
Specify RWD or xDrive. Our 2021 330i listings carry the sixth VIN digit for this reason — 1 for rear-wheel drive, 7 for xDrive. Oil pan and front sump shape differ, so the wrong one will not clear the front differential or driveshaft. The same split runs through the 230i, M240i and 740i.
-
Confirm the chassis, not just the model name. 2021 straddles BMW platform changes: the 2 Series exists as the F44 Gran Coupe, the F22-generation M2 and the new G42 230i, and the X5 and X7 are G05 and G07 with 48V mild-hybrid starter-generators on the sixes. Brackets, harnesses and ancillaries follow the chassis code, so the chassis has to match before the engine code is even worth checking.
-
Confirm the match with your own VIN before you order. Your VIN settles the engine code, the tune, the chassis and the drivetrain in one step. Text it to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm in writing exactly which unit fits your vehicle before you pay.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.
