Why Buy a Used Volkswagen Engine from Auto Power Source
Volkswagen's engine catalog is one of the most engineering-dense in the industry, spanning the legendary 1.8T 20V of the Mk4 era, three distinct generations of the 2.0T TSI EA888, cult-favorite TDI diesels (1.9 and 2.0 common-rail), the unique narrow-angle VR6, and modern downsized turbos. Within the lineup, generation matters tremendously. The 2.0T TSI EA888 alone has three generations (Gen 1: CCTA/CBFA, Gen 2: CAEB/CCZA/CCZB, Gen 3: CXBB/CHHB/CZTA/DGUA) — they share a family name but Gen 1/2 have known timing chain tensioner and PCV failures that Gen 3 resolved. Order the wrong generation and it will not directly bolt in, and the ECU will not recognize the engine.
Every Volkswagen engine we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor vehicle, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse pending sale. Each unit went through our six-step inspection — VIN-matching, ASE testing, noise & smoke verification, full visual inspection, multi-angle photography, and palletized shipping. On EA888 Gen 1/2 units we specifically inspect the timing chain tensioner condition; on all FSI/TSI direct-injection units we assess intake carbon; on TDI diesels we verify Dieselgate calibration state and any emissions modifications against the donor VIN.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for identical Volkswagen engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and get 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. Up to a 3-year warranty covers you if anything goes wrong after install. Across 100,000+ Engines+Transmissions In Stock, we hold a 0% fitment-related return rate.

Volkswagen Engine Buying Guide
Five things to verify before buying a used Volkswagen engine:
EA888 has THREE generations — not directly interchangeable. The 2.0T TSI EA888 spans Gen 1 (2008–2011: CCTA/CBFA), Gen 2 (2011–2014: CAEB/CCZA/CCZB), and Gen 3 (2015+: CXBB/CHHB/CZTA/DGUA). Gen 1 and Gen 2 have documented timing chain tensioner failures and PCV diaphragm issues; Gen 3 resolved both but added its own water pump wear item. Confirm the exact engine code (VIN 8th digit or door jamb sticker) before ordering — do not order by "2.0T TSI" alone.
TDI Dieselgate: calibration state is a hard requirement. Post-2015 recall, all affected 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI V6 engines were subject to VW-supplied emissions modifications. Modified and unmodified units have different DEF handling, exhaust hardware, EGR calibration, and ECU tuning. Ask for the donor VIN's modification status — mixing a modified engine into an unmodified chassis (or vice versa) will throw check-engine codes and may fail smog inspection.
1.9 TDI ALH vs BEW vs BRM: three distinct variants. The Mk4/Mk5 1.9 TDI is arguably the most bulletproof VW engine, but the three US variants differ. ALH (Mk4, 1999–2003) is the collectible pump-nozzle unit with the strongest aftermarket. BEW (Mk4 2004–2005) is the same-era PD variant. BRM (Mk5 2005–2006) is the final US pump-nozzle before common-rail. They share the family but need distinct ancillary hardware.
VR6 timing chain rails wear on high-mileage 3.2L and 3.6L FSI. The narrow-angle VR6 (Corrado, R32, and later 3.6L FSI in Passat/CC/Atlas) has a rear-mounted timing chain, and chain rail failures are documented on units past 100K miles. Symptoms include cold-start rattle and check-engine codes for cam correlation. We inspect chain condition on every VR6 in inventory and disclose findings before sale.
2.0L FSI Turbo (BPY): HPFP cam follower is the known failure point. The pre-EA888 BPY engine (2006–2008 GTI, GLI, Audi A4 B7) is a great performance long-block but the high-pressure fuel pump cam follower is a documented wear item that can destroy the intake cam if it fails. We inspect every BPY cam follower before listing and recommend replacement as standard practice at install regardless of donor mileage.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any engine ships.

Practical guides from our team — how to install a used Volkswagen engine, what to check on delivery, and what really matters when buying online.
Up to 3 years, depending on the specific unit. The exact warranty term is listed on each product page.
What does ASE-tested mean?
ASE-certified technicians compression-test every cylinder and run leak-down evaluation on engines. Plus noise & smoke verification, visual inspection, and multi-angle photography before shipment.
How long until delivery?
Prep and ship time is 3-5 business days. Transit time is 2-3 business days after dispatch via freight carrier.
Can I see photos before I buy?
Yes. Multi-angle photos of the actual unit sent before payment.
Do I need my VIN?
Strongly recommended for exact-fit matching. Volkswagen engines vary significantly by trim, body style, and year.
What if I do not approve the photos?
Every dollar back. No restocking fees, no return freight charges.
Why cheaper than dealer new?
Used OEM from low-mileage donors. Same Volkswagen engineering, fraction of the cost.
Every Volkswagen engine you buy earns rewards. 10 orders (yours or referred) = $500 cash credit. Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers with discounts, priority support, and private inventory access.
Every Volkswagen engine we ship has been through these six steps:
1. VIN-Matching
We match the donor VIN to your VIN to confirm engine code, emissions calibration, and drivetrain fit.
2. Tested & Verified
ASE-certified technicians compression-test every cylinder and run leak-down evaluation on each engine. Transmissions are Shift-Tested through all gears.
3. Noise & Smoke Verification
Engines are run on the test stand to verify normal mechanical sound, clean exhaust, and no abnormal smoke — catches internal wear static pressure tests miss.
4. Visual Inspection
Every accessible component is inspected: turbos, manifolds, valve covers, accessories, sensor harnesses.
5. Photograph & Catalog
Multi-angle photos sent to you BEFORE we ship for your approval.
6. Palletize & Ship
Strapped on a heavy-duty wooden pallet, shipped via freight at no charge.
Our Photos-Before-Shipment Guarantee
Before any engine leaves our warehouse, we dismantle the donor unit and send you multi-angle photographs. You approve. If you do not approve, you get every dollar back — no questions, no restocking fees, no return freight charges. On top of 30-day money-back and up to 3-year warranty.
