Why Buy a Used Volvo Transmission from Auto Power Source
Volvo does not build its own automatic transmissions — the entire modern automatic lineup is sourced from Aisin. The TF-80SC 6-speed powers S60, V70, XC60, XC70 and XC90 through the mid-2010s; the AWF8F35 8-speed came in with the Drive-E platform in 2015 and pairs with T5, T6, and T8 powertrains; the older AW55-50 and AW55-51SN 5-speed served S60, V70 and S80 through the early-to-mid 2000s. Each of these has Volvo-specific TCM calibration — an Aisin TF-80SC pulled from a Ford Freestyle will not run correctly in an XC60 without calibration work. The manual side (M56, M58, M66, M90) is genuinely Volvo, and the MPS6 Powershift dual-clutch is shared with Ford's notorious DPS6.
Every Volvo transmission we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor vehicle, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse. Each unit goes through our six-step inspection: VIN-matching against the donor and against your car, ASE Shift-Testing through all gears, noise & smoke verification, full visual inspection of the case, valve body and pan, multi-angle photography for your approval, and palletized freight shipping. MPS6 Powershift units get an additional clutch pack and TCM inspection — the dry-clutch design and Ford-shared TCM make this the most trouble-prone unit in the Volvo catalog. Rejected units never reach the buyer.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for the same Volvo engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and you have 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. Up to a 3-year warranty covers you if anything goes wrong after install, and our six-step inspection has held our fitment-related return rate at 0% across 100,000+ shipments.

Volvo Transmission Buying Guide
Volvo's transmission story is really an Aisin story: three generations of Aisin transverse automatics on the FWD/AWD platforms, plus Volvo's own M-series manuals and the Ford-shared MPS6 Powershift. Five things to verify before buying a used Volvo transmission:
-
Match the Aisin generation exactly — TF-80SC / AWF8F35 / AW55-50 are three different units. The AW55-50/51SN 5-speed (early-to-mid 2000s) is not interchangeable with the TF-80SC 6-speed (mid-2000s through mid-2010s), and neither is compatible with the AWF8F35 8-speed (Drive-E, 2015+). Case, bellhousing, torque converter, and TCM connector are all different across generations.
-
MPS6 Powershift — verify condition and TCM revision. The MPS6 in Volvo C30/C70/S40/V50 is essentially Ford's DPS6 dual-clutch with Volvo TCM calibration. Both had documented dry-clutch and TCM issues resulting in class-action settlements at Ford. Ask about prior clutch pack service and TCM software revision before ordering.
-
FWD vs AWD is a two-part question on Volvo. AWD Volvos use the Aisin transaxle for gear-changing PLUS a separate Haldex coupling (also called AOC, All-wheel-drive Output Coupling) at the rear axle. The transaxle and the Haldex are ordered separately. Haldex generation matters: Gen 4 (pre-2015) and Gen 5 (2015+ SPA platform) are not cross-compatible.
-
M-series manual generations are not interchangeable. M56/M58 (5-speed) served the 850, S70, first-gen V70 and first-gen S40; M66 (6-speed) is the modern unit for S40/V50/C30/C70/S60 manual variants; M90 is the R-series 5-speed only paired with the B5234T high-output engine in 850 T5-R, S70 R and V70 R.
-
Drive-E T8 Hybrid is a matched-set order. The AWF8F35 in a T8 Twin Engine PHEV pairs with an integrated crankshaft-mounted ISG and a separate rear-axle electric motor. A T8 AWF8F35 pulled from an XC60 T8 is not the same order as a T6 or T5 AWF8F35 — the hybrid version has different housing, different sensors, and different TCM. Confirm T5/T6/T8 before ordering.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any transmission ships.
