Why Buy a Used Porsche Engine from Auto Power Source
Porsche has run engines that share a displacement and nothing else — a 4.8 Cayenne is a naturally aspirated S engine or a twin-turbo Turbo engine, a 3.6 is a VR6 or a direct-injected V6 depending on the year, a 3.4 is a 996 Carrera engine, a Cayman S engine or a 981 Boxster S engine, and a 911 3.6 is a 320 hp Carrera or a 415 hp Turbo. Every product on this page is titled by VIN code (the 5th digit on Porsche), by turbo or w/o turbo, by RWD or AWD on the Panamera and Cayenne, by 996 or 997 model, and by horsepower and body style where Porsche split the engine. Our 238 verified Porsche engines cover the whole run: the 4.8 V8s in the Cayenne and Panamera, the 3.6 V6s in the Cayenne and Panamera, the first-generation Cayenne 4.5 and 3.2, the current twin-turbo V6s and hybrids, the M96 and M97 flat-sixes in the Boxster, Cayman and 911, the 981 and 718 engines, and the Macan four and V6s.
Every Porsche engine we sell has been pulled from a low-mileage donor vehicle, cataloged by VIN, and held in our climate-controlled warehouse pending sale. Each unit goes through our six-step inspection — VIN-matching against the donor and against your vehicle, compression and leak-down testing of every cylinder, noise verification, full visual inspection of block, heads and timing cover, multi-angle photography for your approval, and palletized freight. M96 and M97 units get an intermediate-shaft bearing and bore-scoring check, turbo units get a turbo-shaft and PCV inspection, and V8 units get a timing-chain and cam-adjuster review. Rejected units never reach the buyer.
You pay a fraction of dealer-new pricing for the same Porsche engineering, ship free on a heavy-duty pallet anywhere in the continental U.S., and have 30 days from delivery to return for any reason — no restocking fees. The warranty printed on the listing — with extended coverage up to 3 years available — covers you if anything goes wrong after install. Across 100K+ engines and transmissions in stock, we hold a 0% fitment-related return rate.

Porsche Engine Buying Guide
5 things to verify before buying a used Porsche engine:
-
Read the VIN 5th digit — on Porsche it is the engine code, and displacement alone is not enough. Porsche encodes the engine in the fifth character of the VIN, and every product on this page is titled by it. A 4.8 Cayenne is VIN D (S, w/o turbo) or VIN C (Turbo); a 911 3.6 is VIN A (Carrera, 320 hp) or VIN B (Turbo, 415 hp); a Macan is VIN A (2.0) or VIN B (3.0). Match the code first.
-
Turbo and naturally aspirated units are different engines. The Cayenne Turbo 4.8 and the Cayenne S 4.8 share a block and nothing else — heads, pistons, intake and controller all differ — and the listings say turbo or w/o turbo for that reason. The same holds for the 996 Turbo against the Carrera and the 718 turbo four against the 981 flat-six.
-
RWD and AWD units are listed separately. On the Panamera and Cayenne the all-wheel-drive engine carries a different sump, mounts and front-drive hardware from the rear-drive unit of the same year and code. Every Panamera listing says RWD or AWD — match it to your drivetrain.
-
Watch the model generation, horsepower and throttle split. The 911 is listed by 996 or 997 model and by horsepower, the early 996 by with or without electric throttle control, the Boxster and Cayman by base or S, and the 2013-on cars by 981 or 718 — none of which interchange. Compare the listing to your VIN and build before ordering.
-
Confirm the match with your own VIN before you order. Your VIN settles the engine code, drivetrain and build split in one step. Text it to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm in writing exactly which unit fits your vehicle before you pay.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.
