Why Buy a 2003 GMC Engine from Auto Power Source
2003 sits in the middle of the GMT800 run, and the engine line is wide. A 2003 Sierra 1500 could leave the plant with a 4.3L LU3 V6, a 4.8L LR4, a 5.3L LM7 or flex-fuel L59, or a 6.0L LQ4 in either gasoline or compressed-natural-gas form. The displacement on the window sticker does not identify the engine. The 8th digit of the VIN does.
That is why every listing on this page carries its VIN letter, and why we will not ship a 2003 GMC engine until we have read your VIN ourselves. Our ASE-certified technicians compression-test and leak-down-test each unit, pressure-check the cooling system, scope the cylinder walls and verify the block and head castings against the VIN code before it is cleared for sale.
Three 2003-specific splits matter more than any other. The 6.6L Duramax here is the LB7 (VIN 1) throughout — the LLY does not arrive until partway through 2004 — but the LB7 stock itself splits by emissions package into California, Federal opt NF2 and Federal opt NF4, and those calibrations are not interchangeable. The 6.0L LQ4 shipped in both gasoline and CNG form, on the Sierra 1500 and the Savana 3500, with different fuel rails, injectors and ECM calibration. And the 5.3L comes three ways: the iron-block truck LM7 (VIN T), its E85 flex-fuel twin the L59 (VIN Z), and the aluminium-block LM4 (VIN P) fitted only to the Envoy XL. Every one of these splits is named in the family table above so nothing hides behind a displacement figure.
Every engine ships with a 3-year warranty, free freight to the lower 48, and our own written confirmation of the fitment we matched. If the unit is not right, we handle the return and the replacement — you do not chase a yard.

2003 GMC Engine Buying Guide
5 things to verify before buying a used 2003 GMC engine:
-
Read the 8th VIN digit first. On a 2003 GMC that single character is the engine code: X is the 4.3L LU3, V the 4.8L LR4, T and Z the two truck 5.3L V8s, P the Envoy-only 5.3L LM4, U the 6.0L LQ4, 1 the 6.6L Duramax LB7, G the 8.1L big block, S the 4.2L inline-six, and 4 or H the two S-10 fours. Nothing else on the vehicle is as reliable.
-
Check the emissions package on a Duramax. Every 2003 Duramax is the LB7 (VIN 1), but the stock splits three ways: California, Federal with option NF2 and Federal with option NF4. The calibration and emissions hardware differ between them, and fitting the wrong package will not pass an emissions test even when the engine runs. We list each variant separately for that reason.
-
Do not mix a CNG 6.0L with a gasoline one. GMC built the 6.0L LQ4 in both gasoline and compressed-natural-gas form in 2003, on the Sierra 1500 and the Savana 3500. The fuel rails, injectors and ECM calibration all differ. They are listed apart here, and we match on your VIN so the right fuel system goes out.
-
Separate the three 5.3L V8s. LM7 (VIN T) is the iron-block truck engine and L59 (VIN Z) is its E85 flex-fuel twin, with its own fuel pump, injectors and sensors. LM4 (VIN P) is the aluminium-block 5.3L fitted only to the Envoy XL on the Atlas platform — same displacement, different mounts, accessories and wiring, and it does not interchange with a Sierra, Yukon or Savana.
-
Confirm the match with your own VIN before you order. Your VIN settles the engine code, drivetrain and fuel system in one step. Text it to +1-307-441-5554 and we will confirm in writing exactly which unit fits your vehicle before you pay.
Our ASE-certified technicians verify every one of these points against your VIN before any unit ships.
